Buhl Bushong Quilt Exhibit from Humble Quilts

So I met my friend Laurie in Dulles Airport and we took off on our whirlwind trip right away!

Look! Look! Turn around! I need a photo! lol We spent a lot of time doing that!!
This old building was in Strasburg.

Union church circa 1825

We made it! Harrisonburg is where the Virginia Quilt Museum is located.

The original quilt- circa 1855

Such a terrific variety of quilts were chosen for the museum exhibit.

I have to admit that it was pretty special seeing my quilt hanging there! (on the right)

I hope you enjoyed that exhibit!

My Buhl Bushong quilt is on its way to the VA Quilt Museum for the special exhibit starting
September 23rd. I will not be able to be there for the reception but have plans to be at the museum sometime around October 20-23. If you are nearby I'd love to meet up!

Would also love to know any terrific places to see antique quilts or textiles
in the area or in Washington DC. Email me or leave a comment! Thank you!

VA Quilt Museum and A Garden of Hope Exhibit from Humble Quilts

The Virginia Quilt Museum will have a special exhibit of Buhl Bushong quilts  from September 21-December 23. It is called
"A Garden of Hope"
I found out this week my quilt was accepted to be included!

I'd love to be able to attend the reception but I have a prior commitment. Hopefully I'll be able to go at some point while the quilts are hanging.

My quilt is entirely machine appliqued.

Sharon Tucker did an amazing job on the quilting!

I have to get busy and add a hanging sleeve!

I hope you are having a great week!

Buhl Bushong Finish! Boom! from Humble Quilts

My lighting wasn't the best but here it is!!

It is about 87" square and was quilted by Sharon of Grass Roots Quilting.  She is great about making sure what you want works with your quilt. We bounced back and forth lots of ideas and sketches until something clicked! I can recommend her highly. The batting is Quilters Dream 100% cotton select. Thanks for cheering me on to get this complete! My first post about it was Sept 11, 2019

Sneak Peak from Humble Quilts

I got my quilt back from the quilter a couple of weeks ago and finally got a chance to get it trimmed. This weekend I'll make binding and get it attached!! Whoop! Whoop!
FYI, It is the Buhl Bushong quilt offered as a BOM from the Virginia Quilt Museum.

After trashing a printer I'm afraid to try it again to make my quilt label. I do really need a better pen for labels. I'm using a Micron5 in black. Do you have any better recommendations?
Here's a peak into my latest Instagram.
Speaking of Instagram, I ...

Buhl Bushong Top Complete! Boom! from Humble Quilts

Here is my completed Buhl Bushong quilt top! I pieced a backing while at my sewing retreat last weekend and it is now on its way to Sharon, Grass Roots Quilting, for her to work some magic.

The overall size is about 87" square. The Virginia Quilt Museum reproduced this quilt from one in their collection. They really did an awesome and accurate job. The original antique is from 1855. Get more info HERE

JoAnn from Quilters Coop sent me some photos of fabrics after I showed her the quilt top and told her I was looking for backing. Thank ...

Buhl Bushong Update from Humble Quilts

I got some time this weekend to work on adding the borders to the Buhl Bushong quilt! Yay!!

It was so good to see it again.

Here they are attached before adding on the corners.
Looks like I should have done a bit of editing, but my time is short this morning.
Corner one.

Corner two

Corner 3

Corner 4
I may add the year in applique as well.

And when the corners are completely appliqued on I"ll get a better photo. It is fun to see it hanging on my banister.

I was able to get away for ...

ยป Humble Quilts

The next step to the Buhl Bushong is the borders I've been working on for several months.

The first step will be to trim them near the line I made above the flowers. I'll be adding the borders to the center section I shared on Wednesday, then appliqueing the corner flowers on.

I mentioned I was going to go huckleberry picking... I forgot how tedious it is!
It isn't like farm grown berries. I wore shorts and got totally scratched up too!

Yummy! It was totally worth it!

Of course while in the mountains I took a ...

Ta-Da! Buhl Bushong Center! from Humble Quilts

Yay! I got a little bit of time this week to finish the applique on the center section and get it all sewn together!! I used some different muslin, which I love! It seems to antique the quilt from the get-go! Uhhh I'm hoping the burn mark makes it looks aged too!!! Aargh!
Here's my helpers!

It has been ages since I've been sick so this is no surprise. For a short time the Red Cross is doing a Covid antibody test when you donate blood. For those that test positive for the antibody, you can donate ...

Buhl Bushong Repeated from Humble Quilts

One more quadrant complete! I only have the buds to applique on the final 4 blocks, sew them together, then get the center blocks together! So nice to think about this getting closer to a finish.
Cory was off this weekend and we went for a picnic and this was our view!
Elsa and I got out early Sunday for a walk. Mt Jefferson was looking rather regal.

Thank you for your kind comments about our women's gathering.
We are hoping to hold a Part 2, Q & A

I hope your weekend was wonderful adn you are looking forward ...

More Buhl and Fauna from Humble Quilts

My lighting isn't so good as the sun goes down, but I did manage to make my bud centers acceptable to me. I figure once it is quilted and washed they will not need to be perfect.
Two sections done! It is likely getting bloggy boring, but feels so good to be making progress!
I got a package of goodies in from Superior. Too bad it wasn't more exciting then sewing machine needles!!

You will have to look close, but this was my first sighting of fawns this past week! When we see them we know to keep ...

Buhl Bushong Continued plus Wildflower Wow! from Humble Quilts

I'm slowly making progress on assembling the center of the Buhl Bushong quilt. Get more info on it HERE.

I knew this could pose a problem. I think I have a fix for this one. I'm not going to get crazy about all of them matching perfectly. It will quilt out, right?? LOLOL

Since my son now lives closer to me we were able to get out on a mid week hike. We warmed up 2 miles down the wrong trail...heehee

This is what we came to see! Hillsides of wildflowers!
From the National Forest website: Set ...

Buhl Bushong Update from Humble Quilts

As I mentioned in my Facebook group last week, I've been absent from my sewing room.
The stress of life right now is brutal and I find my solice outdoors. BUT, I did enjoy a rare weekend home and I enjoyed some sewing.

TA-DA! All my rainbow blocks are done!! Well, almost....

I had an incident trimming them up. Here was my fix.

These little buds go in the corner of each block. I hope I can get them to line up when I sew them together. Someone did all 4 corners as one piece, which is a great ...

Buhl Bushong Update from Humble Quilts

My design wall isn't very big, but I've managed to get a few more blocks ready to piece! I think I have 2 more to finish appliqueing then I'll start getting the top together. I still have corner buds to figure out...but hey! it's something! (my background fabric is not pink like the photo leads you to believe)

If you want to learn more about this quilt you can HERE. It is sponsored by The Virginia Quilt Museum.

I'm making a small quilt for a swapper who may have gotten the raw end of ...

Buhl Bushong April from Humble Quilts

I finished the April applique but am still behind on the center blocks. That will be my Sunday push!

So many little swap quilts winging their way across the country and the world! Just a reminder to get your quilt in the mail before May 9th. Overseas mail is being hung up and slowed down by lack of international flights.

I hope you are doing well!

Much love!

Buhl Bushong April from Humble Quilts

I've got a couple of large projects going and Buhl Bushong from the Virginia Quilt Museum is one of them.

These blocks are ready to applique.
This is lightly fused but think I'll be making a little change to this block.
I'm appliqueing these too and need to make headway on them!!

Cory and I are stealing away to the wilderness for a quick overnight jaunt.

Take care
With love

Buhl Bushong Quilt from Humble Quilts

The lighting in my sewing room isn't very good but here are my blocks so far. There are 16 total, YAY! Half way! The corners also have applique but will not do those until I start assembling the these blocks.

Anniversary Quilt 2020 update:
How do you all feel about continuing this quilt? There are many  quiltalongs going on, which I encourage you to do while we cannot be together in real life. Because ours was going to be spread out it isn't really a communal sewalong.  Someone already told me they'd like to set theirs aside ...

Monday! Monday! Bushong Quilt from Humble Quilts

I was able to get in my sewing room the day after National Quilting day. Here is month 9. The middle of the last appliqued border.
I'll start getting the center blocks pieced. 1 is pieced, 8 are ready to assemble.

I opted outside on Saturday.
Early enough to enjoy the sunrise.
and the three Sisters.

Made one more stop at a snowed over lake. It was a lot colder at that higher elevation than I had anticipated. Still so good to get some fresh air and clear perspective.

Let's make it a good week!

Buhl Bushong Update and Mardi Gras from Humble Quilts

It is so hard to get a good photo of the long border. I tried outside but it was too breezy.  The lower one is the newest finish.
I took this late last night so the color looks so weird. It really isn't pink!

There will be a bud in the corner of this block.

I'm in a local hiking group and we went out for a Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras hike!

Have a great weekend!

Thanks you for your sweet comments on the bird blocks. I'm having a blast making them!
